La Enseñanza, Casa de la Ciudad is a beautiful neoclassical building built in 1891, originally intended to be a seminary. The house was restored, furnished and inhabited by Frans Blom and Gertrude Duby incorporating the most exquisite taste of the greatest collectors and its deep footprint can be seen in all corners. Pre-Columbian, ethnographic, historical, and documentary objects coexist in harmony with art in all forms of expression, especially the prominent styles of the region. Trees, plants, and the architecture have made this space a favorite of visitors to San Cristóbal de Las Casas.

The property that today houses the La Enseñanza Casa de La Ciudad project, is managed by the Na Bolom Cultural Association and since 2013 it has been open to the public offering cultural and academic activities.

La Enseñanza, Casa de La Ciudad

La Enseñanza, Casa de La Ciudad was built from 1902 to 1908 by the architect Carlos Zacarías Flores using the neoclassical style.

In 1915 the architect together with his daughter María Adelina Flores founded a school for young ladies, where arts was taught, later an elementary school was opened, and along with it a trade school, where indigenous people and low-income people were educated and taught some trade (carpentry, bakery, tailoring, etc.). The school grew greatly, for which it became necessary to instruct people for the teaching of classes, before which Miss Maria Adelina Flores, decides to start working to create a standard for teachers, which is achieved June 23, 1922.

La Enseñanza was one of the most important educational centers in Chiapas and one of the factors that promoted San Cristóbal de Las Casas as one of the most important bastions of education in the Southeast of the Mexican Republic.
